Rosalynn Carter Is Survived by ‘About’ 47 Descendants, Who Took Care of Former First Lady during Her Last Days

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of President Jimmy Carter, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family. In May 2023, it was revealed that she had dementia, and later, the couple entered hospice care at home. Despite the challenges, their grandson, Hugo Wentzel, emphasized the family’s unity, stating, “we’re really oriented around our close, tight-knit circle right now.”

In August 2023, another grandson, Josh Carter, shared insights into their home dynamics after choosing hospice care. With the couple no longer able to entertain, the responsibility fell on the younger generation. Josh highlighted the continuous care for Jimmy during his hospice, acknowledging the family’s preparedness for whatever came next.

Jimmy and Rosalynn, married for 77 years, enjoyed a life centered around family. In an interview, Rosalynn dispelled a breakfast tradition but mentioned how she still prepared supper. The couple, despite aging, maintained endearing nicknames for each other.

Their large family, comprising four children, 22 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, was a source of joy. Jimmy, known for his humanitarian work with Habitat for Humanity, considered his family the foundation of his happiness. Despite their political history, the Carters embraced a normal life, residing in a modest Georgia home.

The couple’s frugality was evident in their everyday habits, including dining on paper plates and making their yogurt. Jimmy’s commitment to family extended to tutoring his son in Latin and prioritizing time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Carters’ family bond remained strong, engaging in activities like fly fishing and bird watching. Over two decades, they took family holidays between New Year’s Day and Christmas. Rosalynn and Jimmy found joy in their extended family, emphasizing their motivation and interest in the well-being of their descendants.

In his reflections, Jimmy Carter acknowledged Rosalynn as the cornerstone of his life, expressing gratitude for choosing the right partner. The couple’s enduring love and commitment to family define the legacy they leave behind.
