Laura Hillier, a beloved student at Nelson High School in Ontario, Canada, passed away on January 20, 2016, at the age of 18 after a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Diagnosed at 13, Laura fought the disease for four years and was declared cancer-free, only for it to return more aggressively in May 2015. Despite the intense treatments, she sadly passed away while waiting for a transplant.
Laura was known for her love of music and theater, and her vibrant spirit touched everyone around her. Her classmates and teachers paid a touching tribute at her funeral by covering her casket with handwritten messages, a heartfelt gesture inspired by the tradition of signing yearbooks. These notes, filled with love and admiration, honored Laura’s bravery, kindness, and artistic talents.
Purple, Laura’s favorite color, was prominently featured throughout her funeral, symbolizing the deep affection her community had for her. Laura’s family was deeply moved by the outpouring of support, with one message reading, “You will always be a hero.”
Laura Hillier was taken too soon, but the love and memories shared by those who knew her continue to shine brightly. Rest in peace, Laura.
